Vacuum cleaners

These machines were invented around 1900 and only wealthy people could afford to buy them, however today vacuum cleaners are an indispensible household appliance. These days with high pollution and more people suffering from allergies and asthma we need all the help we can get to keep our homes healthy and free from the dust, grime and pollens’ from outdoors. There are quite a few types to choose from and to avoid confusion you should take stock of what you want sort of cleaning you will be doing with the vacuum cleaner.

Some Things to Consider:

  1. What type of house do you live in and do you have family pets? Children and pets will bring in more of the outside dirt and households with pets will have the added problem of pet hair which can be very difficult to get rid of as it is coated with oils which makes it cling to carpet and soft furnishing fibres. A vacuum cleaner with a turbo/power head will probably be the best here.
  2. Those who live in a home with hard wooden or tile floors and a few throw rugs will benefit from using a canister carpet as the brush head on a canister type is kind to the floor and usually you will have a special head for the rugs and some even come with a power head to clean rugs very effectively
  3. For a house with wall to wall carpets then an upright will be the idea appliance for you as the upright machine is very powerful given that it draws the dirt through a shorter distance than a canister type and therefore more effective. They are also good for getting close to the walls. Uprights with a power head are very good for getting the dirt out of the carpet pile and excellent for sucking up pet hair. The only downside with a power head is that long hairs and cottons can get caught up in the broom as it spins and this build up eventually blocking the head , however this is easily remedied by cutting the hairs with sharp scissors along the broom tubing area and pulling them away .
  4. For homes with stairs probably it is difficult to clean with both uprights and canisters types of vacuum cleaner. Stairs are a problem so to save you the back breaking work each and every week it might be a good idea to purchase a cordless vacuum cleaner specifically for this purpose, and it can also doubles as a vacuum for the car as it will be very easy to manipulate around and under seats, far better and easier than a conventional vacuum cleaner can. Also it will be ideal for those small clean up jobs particularly in kitchens where it will seem like overkill to get out the large vacuum cleaner.

Vacuum Cleaners – General Use

Vacuuming your carpets should be done about once a week to properly maintain them, keeping them fresh and healthy and do it about twice a week in heavy traffic areas; you should work against the pile occasionally to pick up the grit trapped in and under the fibres. Also regularly attend to soft furniture such as sofas and curtains, choose a vacuum cleaner that has tools that help with this. For pet hairs on seating fabric, rub a latex gloved hand over the surface of the chair or sofa to pull the fine hairs from the fabric making vacuuming up easier.

Vacuuming often will extend the life of your carpets and to help maintain a healthy and fresh smelling home have your carpets cleaned about every 18 months. Check here for some interesting information on the History of the Vacuum Cleaner
