Carpet Maintenance in the Family Home
To add to your routine, both for the health of your family and the life of your carpet, you should get your carpets cleaned about every 18 months or whenever they start to look grubby. You can extend the life of your carpet by not allowing outdoor shoes to be worn inside or by putting rugs at entrance doors to receive most of the dirt brought in from outside. As well as this the crucial element is to make sure you keep up a once or twice a week vacuuming routine. Purchase the best quality vacuum cleaner you can afford as this machine will work effectively to keep your carpet looking good for many years to come. Here are some tips and solutions for carpet stains that often occur with children around:
- Make sure you attend to spills immediately they occur.
- Mud – Let the area dry and then scrape up as much as possible. Use a vacuum cleaner to pick up the residue. If a stain remains use the dishwashing solution method below.
- Blood – Use the dishwashing solution but make sure water is cold or just tepid.
- Jams – Use dishwashing solution first. If a stain remains, blot with a solution of 2 tablespoons of ammonia in one cup of water, rinse and then blot with a solution of half a cup of vinegar in one cup of water to neutralise the ammonia. Then rinse with warm water and blot dry.
- Ice-cream – First blot with a commercial cleaning fluid, rinse well and then use the dishwashing solution.
Dishwashing solution method: Mix half a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in one cup of tepid water; blot the stain from the outside inwards, until you remove the stain. Then rinse with clear water and place a dry towel over the area with a weight on top until dry. Replace the towel or paper towelling when it gets wet as it soaks up the liquid.
After the carpet is dry make sure to thoroughly vacuum clean over the treated area. Take a look here for more stain solutions.
