Carpet Odors from Pet Accidents
With pets in the house it is essential that you properly care for your carpets to keep them looking fresh and protect against a build up of pet odors that are often held in the carpet fibres.
First your Vacuum Cleaner is your best helper to clean away the pet hair and the grit that pets bring into the house from outside, so make sure you do your homework and purchase yourself an efficient model, it will be worth every dollar as a powerful vacuum cleaner will play a big role in extending the life of your carpet.
Secondly you should get your carpets professionally cleaned about once every 12 – 18 months. In between times make sure you attend to the inevitable accident that is part of having pets share your home with you. Here are a couple of solutions to two common pet problems:
Vomit – scrape up the solids first and flush with water with a cleaning enzyme digester (such as nil odour) diluted in water as per the instructions, this will neutralize the odour. (A cleaning enzyme is available at pet shops). Or if you are in a hurry and just have borax available just sprinkle borax over the area after first sponging and blotting the area with water (Borax will naturalize the odour)… leave it to dry then later thoroughly vacuum over the area.
Pet urine – first blot up as much of the urine as possible with a towel or paper towelling, then flush with water and use a towel to soak this up. Next use a mixture of one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in one cup of lukewarm water, blot. Lastly rinse this with 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar solution and again blot with a thick towel placing a heavy weight over the top to help the capillary action. Vacuum clean the area thoroughly when dry. Have a look at this solution for removing cat or dog urine from carpets.
