How To Decide What Kind Of Vacuum Is Right For You And Your House?

by Gregg Hall

The vacuum cleaner business has grown tremendously in recent years. There are new and innovative styles coming out every year. We are no longer confined to the traditional upright bagged vacuum cleaner. Instead we can choose from vacuums with and without bags, as well as vacuums that are upright, canister or have HEPA filtration systems.

The first official vacuum cleaner was developed in 1908 by James Spangler. James was the cousin of William Hoover, the name that so many of us are familiar with when it comes to vacuums. James is the one who was able to obtain the patent rights to the first vacuum cleaner that ran on electricity.
But even before the first electrical vacuum a man named Daniel Hess had created a machine that worked like a vacuum. Daniel's machine was patented in 1860 and was designed to use rotating brushes that were attached to the bottom of the machine and helped create suction.

It use to be that we were only worried about making sure our vacuum picked up the crumbs and dirt that was in our carpet. To ensure you are gathering all the dirt you should look at the suction of the motor that your vacuum cleaner has. The bigger the motor the more capable it will be to suction all the debris you have in your carpet.

Another important aspect of a vacuum cleaner is its ability to filter the dirt out before spitting the air back into your environment. With the invention of the HEPA filter now most dirt particles, allergens, and pollens are cleaned from the air as you vacuum. The HEPA filter in a vacuum can really reduce the allergy affects of a home on the individuals that live there.

You will also need to decide between a canister or regular vacuum. The upright regular vacuum still tends to be the most popular, but many people love the canister type of vacuum for their stairs and vacuuming in tight spots.

With so much variety in vacuum cleaners it can be extremely confusing for people who are just getting started in their vacuum cleaner search. But if you shop according to your needs you will be sure to find the perfect vacuum for you. If you only have a small area of carpet and most of your home is hardwood floors you may not need to invest as much into your new vacuum purchase. On the other hand if your home is all carpet, your vacuum purchase is going to be a major appliance and you should consider investing in a very high quality machine.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
Some Of The Reasons You Just Can't Do Without A Handheld Vacuum

by Gregg Hall

Many people will argue that the most essential home tool is a hammer or a screw driver. But I by far think it is the small handheld vacuum cleaner, especially for homes that have children in them. The handheld vacuum makes cleaning up an absolute breeze. You don't have to drag the large upright vacuum out three times a day, instead just reach for your handheld.

Quit frankly I think I might have needed the vacuum more than my children ever did. They were always willing to clean up their mess when they made it, but sometimes that would have meant waiting for 30 minutes while they picked up hundreds of cheerios. I honestly just didn't have the patience for all that. I never mind a little mess, but I really do not like it when things are dirty, and hundreds of cheerios getting smashed into the carpet as we try to walk around them, just didn't work for me.

I bought my hand held vacuum on the spur of the moment as I passed it in our local retail store. I wasn't planning on purchasing one, in fact I had never really even thought about it as an option. But once I had my handheld vacuum home I was absolutely in love with it. The vacuum was so easy to just grab and take anywhere in the house.

I used it to vacuum dirt by the back door, cheerios in the living room, cat food that had spilled in the laundry room. I have pretty much used my handheld vacuum to pick up anything and everything that has spilled in my home.

I didn't confine myself to using it in the house either. Instead of paying money to vacuum my car at the local car wash, I just grabbed my handheld and headed out to clean my carpets in my car. It is amazing how much dirt and crumbs a grown man can accumulate in his own vehicle.

My handheld vacuum has really been a time saver for me. I don't waste time lugging out our upright vacuum when I want to do a quick clean up of our home. Instead I just quickly run the handheld vacuum over the dirtiest parts of our home. Within minutes our carpets and floors are looking fabulous again.

If you have never tried a handheld vacuum you will be shocked by how lightweight they are and how easily you can get your housework done when using one of these. You really will cut your cleaning time down and save yourself a ton of stress. Next time you are strolling the lanes of your local retailer, or online, consider buying yourself a handheld vacuum to simplify your life.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
Carpet Cleaning Tips for Tough Stains

by Gregg Hall

Before we go into the tips for tough stains, remember when cleaning carpet with a vacuum, walk through the house and pick up any loose debris. Items such as string, buttons, pins, paperclips and coins can clog or damage your machine. A little prevention could end up saving you a lot of money.

Gum on the carpet can leave behind a sticky, gooey mess! Don't panic if you have to remove carpet stains made by gum, however. It's quite easy. Spray the area with WD-40, or smear with peanut butter and the gum will come right out. There may be a spot left behind from the dye in the gum. Cleaning carpet stains such as this are easy too. All you have to do is blot with a little club soda. No one will ever have to know!

The tannins in grape juice can make it difficult to remove carpet stains made up of this dark purple liquid. Club soda can help with this. Pour some directly on the carpet and blot. You can also try cleaning carpet with a solution of vinegar and a mild dishwashing liquid. Again, dab until the stain is removed. Blot again with a damp cloth to remove any residue. DO NOT RUB!

Anyone who has ever had to remove carpet stains will appreciate this tip. If you have chocolate or coffee stains on carpet, dab with straight vinegar. That's all it takes. Blot until the stain is removed and blot again with a damp sponge or cloth to rinse. If the smell of vinegar isn't for you, try a mild else that dishwashing liquid for cleaning carpet stains. Pour some onto a clean cloth and blot until the stain is lifted.

Don't cry over spilled nail polish! Manicure mishaps are easily remedied. To remove carpet stains caused by nail polish, just use nail polish remover! Pour onto a cotton ball or clean cloth and blot until the polish has disappeared. Blot again with clean water to remove all residues. Remember, when cleaning carpet stains, especially those made by nail polish, it's important to blot. Don't rub or the nail polish will spread.

An unfortunate accident with hair dye can make cleaning carpet a nightmare. In many cases, it may even mean the end of your carpet. Hopefully it won't come to this.

There are a few things you can try to remove carpet stains of this nature. First of all, it should go without saying that if hair dye is spilled on the carpet one should act immediately.

Dampen a sponge and apply dishwashing liquid. Blot the stain with the sponge until you've lifted as much of the dye as possible. You can also try doing the same thing with vinegar. If this doesn't work and the stain hasn't set into the carpet too deep, you might be able to snip the very top fibers of the carpet without anyone knowing.

If none of this works, you'll have to call in a professional who makes cleaning carpet stains his business or rearrange your furniture to hide the stain.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is a business consultant and author for many online and offline businesses and lives in Navarre Florida.
